Overview

Overview

Kuching Beach Cleaners Association (also legally registered under Registrar of Societies as Persatuan Pembersih Pantai Kuching, PPM-015-13-29042019) is a non-profit organization that does regular beach clean-ups at selected beaches nearby the capital city of Sarawak, Kuching. We are all running the show on volunteer basis.

Throughout our courses of keeping our beaches clean, we learnt the effect of plastic pollution and that we Malaysians has the habit of the “tidak apa” (don’t care) and “out-of-sight-out-of mind” mindset. To act on this within our capacity (in both manpower and funds), the team has been collaborating with other like-minded NGOs, organizing clean-ups, awareness dialogues and documentary screening.

And as funding permits, we will continue to : organize clean-ups, be part of dialogues and events, attend educational trips, and advocate for proper waste management, marine conservation and promote sustainable lifestyle .

Our Story

Our Story

Alcila grew up climbing trees and having family picnics by the beach during her childhood years –  the best memories of her life. Fast forward after obtaining her driver’s license and saved enough money to travel to the beach, she realizes that the clean sandy beach of past years was ornamented with trash, from plastic bottles to discarded food waste.

She then embarked to do a beach clean to celebrate her 22nd birthday in 2013. An announcement was made on Facebook and a friend responded – Mechelle Emass. The duo then quipped themselves with plastic bags brought from home, gloves from Mechelle’s mum (a nurse), RM20 worth of petrol (struggling students) and hijacked Alcila’s brother’s car; the two cruised on a 2-hour drive to Pandan Beach, Lundu – Alcila’s childhood’s beach.

That was 21st of July 2013.

And since then, from 2 friends, to 3 then grew to 5, to 20 then to over 110 volunteers. From volunteers to supportive friends – friends who eventually founded their own NGO, Sarawak Eco-Warriors. Together with Wildlife Conservation Society Malaysia Program, we strive towards a healthy environment for our future generation. None of this development wouldn’t exist without the magnitude support from them.
